Treasure Island Disaster Preparedness
The difference between wanting to
help
and being helpful is training.
We already know that the Island is a unique place, but
it will
also have unique problems in the next disaster. There are
currently two great ways to get yourself prepared...
San Francisco Fire
Department's
N.E.R.T. (Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams)
and the San Francisco Office of
Emergency Services - Auxiliary Communications Service.
T.I. NERT Team Training in Debris Pile
'Cribbage' Rescue
The Treasure Island NERT Team was off to a great start a
few
years ago when we had our first and only training class out here.
The members of the team were a great bunch but most of them have moved
off of the island, including the coordinator. We really must get
our team back on track with new members. NERTs are going to be the
people who will hopefully be there to save you in a widespread
disasater when the Fire Department's resources are stretched thin.
Join the team! NERT will train you to do light urban
search
and rescue, first
aid, and damage control on a neighborhood level. Frishtah Afifi in the
TIDA Office is collecting names and coordinating training for the
T.I. NERT Team. Give her
a
call at (415) 272-0660 and she'll get you all set up. As soon as
at least 25 names are collected, we'll be able to request the training
for our island.
ACS in the S.F. Emergency Operations
Center
SF OES ACS is an
agency
made up mostly of Amateur Radio operators and is the contingency plan
for communications citywide. SF OES ACS will be vital in keeping
T.I. from being 'cut off ' in a disaster. Currently, there is
only one ACS representative on the island and if he's not home at the
time of the next major disaster, the Island will not have
communications with the Emergency Operations Center over the ACS
network. Join us and do you part for the Island. For more
information
check out their web site .

MUCH easier than it used to be)
